Croutons are just baked, flavored bread cubes. If you have heels or just can't quite finish a whole loaf before it goes bad, this is an economical way to use every last slice!

Yields: Makes 2-3 cups

Ingredients

5-6 slices of bread – or as many day-old's as you have. For gluten free use rice or millet bread

2-3 T olive oil

1-2 T spices such as granulated garlic, oregano, parsley, basil, thyme, sage or rosemary

Preparation

Pre-heat the oven to 400 degrees.

Cut the bread into cubes.

Mix the oil and the spices in a large bowl. Add the cubes into the bowl and mix making sure the bread well is coated.

Place on the baking sheet in one layer and put them in the oven.

Bake until they are dry and golden brown. This could take 20-30 minutes depending on the moisture in the bread. So, check at 10 minutes. If not done, turn and bake another 8-10, etc.

Remove from the oven and toss on top of a salad!

Additional Tips

Add croutons to salads, soups and stews, eat as a snack, or use to make stuffing.

Store left-overs in an air-tight container for a few days or in the freezer for several months.
